BREAKING NEWS: Conde Nast ending its Internship Program

Almost every Fashionista knows or has heard of Conde Nast. If not, Conde Nast is an American Magazine publisher that produces 18 magazines, a few of which are Vogue, Teen Vogue, GQ, Lucky, The New Yorker and Glamour Magazine just to name a few. For years Conde Nast has given interns the foot in the door they need in order to move up in the fashion industry. But on Wednesday October 23rd, they sadly announced they are ending their internship program. Apparently two former interns sued them claiming that they had been paid below minimum wage for the summer jobs at W Magazine and The New Yorker.

Why is this such a depressing news for a Fashionista you ask?

As a graduating senior this upcoming spring semester, these were jobs that I was looking forward to pursuing in order to get my foot in the door. My style icons like Lauren Conrad and Whitney Port whom both interned for Teen Vogue used these outlets in order to get their foot in the door. Now that door is closed shut! It is very disappointing to know that so many girls were so close yet so far. This was our time to shine and now the times like the rest of the world and the economy are just hard now.

Magazines benefit gravely from interns and now I wonder how the system will be. Honestly I myself would have never sued. You can't pay me enough money to take away the exact feeling it would have felt to bump into sightings of my idols like the beloved Anna Wintour and Jane Kramer. Although in cities like New York and California, interns do need to earn a living somehow while fulfilling this position, but I was just so sure that this struggle would make for a great story someday. Now I'm not too sure what the new outlets of opportunity will be. It is a sad time in fashion, but don't be fully discouraged. If you work hard, network, keep your head as high as the heels your wearing, then learning to create your own opportunities will be a piece of cake! After all, we are the creative ones.

Miami Fashion: Cotton's 24 Hour Fashion Show

This past Spring Break 2013 I was privileged enough to go to Miami. While not only soaking up the sun and partying on the scene, I was able to attend Cotton's 24 hour Miami Fashion Show. Channel E's host Giuliana Rancic alongside style Style Watch's new columnist and my style icon Lauren Conrad! The show featured a model a minute wearing 74 brands and designers. The show even featured two designers from my school Virginia Commonwealth University. With bright lights, camera crews, a live crowd, and fresh DJ, this show seemed to be the center of attention on South Beach. Being interviewed and having models working my camera was the def. the highlight of the whole thing. Miami sure knows how to have fun! Be sure to visit Cotton's 24 Hour Runway site and win $300 by dropping a comment on your fave designer from the show!
